Molecular and Quantitative Animal Genetics

Course Description
Classical, molecular, and population genetics with specific emphasis on animal systems will be covered. The course will also disseminate molecular approaches for manipulating genetics at the whole animal level (transgenic and cloning). Other model organisms will be discussed to provide a conceptual framework.
Course Objectives
- To introduce students to the concepts of molecular genetics in animal systems.
- To develop an understanding of the application of genetics principles for the improvement of domestic animals.
Learning outcomes
- Explain molecular, classical, and population genetic principles and their relevance to genetic variation and inheritance in animals.
- Apply genetic techniques such as linkage analysis, gene expression analysis, and chromosomal mapping to solve problems in animal genetics.
- Analyze genomic data to identify genetic traits associated with economically important phenotypes in animals.
- Evaluate current and emerging molecular approaches, such as CRISPR, transgenesis, and cloning, in the context of animal improvement and ethical considerations
